Architecture
Early Missions
While Fray Serra built Mission Carmel 217 years ago, its architecture has changed a lot over time. The earlier missions were all made of rocks and thatch roofs. But the rocks were dangerous during earthquakes, floods, etc. The thatch roofs didn’t protect the inside from rain or cold drafts. That is why Spain started to use adobe and clay bricks. The roofs are now made of red adobe tiles.
